FEE REDUCED FROM $96.00 TO $48.00 PER SEMESTER
FOR FIRST TWO YEARS
This summer, the students leading the Initiative talked with their peers on campus and decided to ask to lower the amount of segregated fees collected for the first two years, so that students who may not be around campus long enough to get to use the new facilities before they graduate won’t be paying the full increase. (Even though, of course, they can definitely use it once they’re alumni!)
After listening to student concerns and revisiting the improvement plan, Union Council met on September 21, 2006 to formally approve lowering the requested segregated fee increase by half during the design phase, with the full amount going into effect when construction begins in 2009.
GOVERNANCE. “Union Council” is the student-lead governing board which has been responsible for running the Wisconsin Union since it was established in 1907. Click here to see the membership list of the 2006-2007 Union Council.
CHANGE IN AMOUNT. Please note that the referendum language has always said that the fee is not to exceed $96 per semester. And now that Union Council has approved it, the fee for the first two years will not exceed $48 per semester. That initial amount was based on an estimate of the square footage that would be needed for all of the things that the student surveys had requested to be included in the new building.
The language of the Initiative has NOT changed, and will appear on the ballot as…
An additional segregated fee not to exceed $96 per semester. The segregated fee portion of this project budget funds the new south campus Union and the restoration of the Theater Wing of the Memorial Union. The fee is expected to be assessed beginning Fall of 2007 and construction is expected to begin in the following year, 2008.
The collection schedule is now expected to be:
Fall 06/Spring 07 - $0
Fall 07/Spring 08 - $48 per semester (while design phase is under way)
Fall 08/Spring 09 - $48 per semester (demolition of Union South Fall 08)
Fall 09 onward - not to exceed $96 per semester (for the full term of the bonds)
