WISCONSIN UNION DESIGN COMMITTEE

If the Student Union Initiative is successful, the Design Committee will act as the steering group for the renovation and restoration projects at Memorial Union as well as the rebuilding of a new south campus union.  This shared governance committee will put together final recommendations to Union Council after creating sub-committees, running focus groups and working with the architects.

The committee consists of:

  • Wisconsin Union president
  • ASM chair
  • 2 alumni-appointed by the Memorial Union Building Association
  • 2 UW-Madison faculty
  • 2 Union staff members: the Director and Associate Director
  • 3 ASM-appointed students
  • 4 WU president-appointed students

Students selected for this committee do not need any prior design or architectural experience or knowledge.  The Wisconsin Union desires student members who are diverse in class standing, background, interests, and majors, and possess a deep interest and passion for student life and the Wisconsin Union.  This committee will start October 20, 2006 and will continue to meet until construction begins.  Two year commitments from students are encouraged but not required.

Sub-committees of the Design committee may include, but are not limited to:

  • Green, sustainable construction
  • Hoofers
  • Historic preservation
  • Interior design
  • General facilities and space
  • Technology
  • Performance space
  • Student organization needs
